Transforming the Home Theater Experience
RESCUING A POOR THEATER DESIGN
This home theater project we took on was a perfect example of a bad foundation. It showed all the signs of a room that wasn’t well thought out, from poor acoustics that created reverberations to lighting prone to casting a glare on the screen. The good news is that any room –from a dedicated basement to a bedroom–can be an excellent space for a theater with the help of an experienced theater designer.
FOLLOW OUR THEATER TRANSFORMATION
STEP 1: CONSULTATION
The first step is a walk-through of your space to see what we’re working with and isolate any issues. In this case, we noticed that the risers already there posed various issues. They didn’t match up with the client’s desired viewing experience, in part because they weren’t the right height for the type of seating they wanted. The lighting fixtures lining the side of the room would create glare while not providing proper illumination. In this step, we focus on advising clients on improvements and the best products available based on our experience.
STEP 2: THE FOUNDATION
After our consultation, we worked with the builder and designer to take care of some of the room’s foundational problems. This included creating a raised riser for more efficient seating and upgrading the trim to black to match the design. During this stage, we also worked on installing any in-wall and in-ceiling components, conduits for additional fixtures and the projector, along with acoustic panels and bass traps.
STEP 3: THE LIGHTING
Next we worked on the small upgrades needed to bring the space to its full potential. For this project, upgrading the lighting was a huge priority. Instead of the limited side lighting the theater had before, we needed to create a layered design that allowed for a multipurpose space. That meant subtle track lighting, scones, and ambient lighting. We took great care to install the fixtures in a way that would highlight the stairs, walkways, and the area in the back. It was essential to incorporate lighting control here to allow the homeowners to adjust lights to create different atmospheres within the room based on the use case. At the press of a button, they can prepare the room to watch movies, do homework, or watch sports. We also added a subtle wallpaper behind the bar seating that adds a touch of style without becoming a deterrent.
STEP 4: THE BIG FINISH
To finish things out, we added grills for the speakers and connected the projector. We then brought in the comfortable theater seating the client picked out, and, of course, last but not least, the much-needed popcorn machine in the back. We also programmed easy control for all the technology in the room. In this case, the client could use a remote or smart device based on each family member’s preference.
